Vehicle Registrations
In South Africa, your vehicle must be registered at the relevant district Licensing department. Motor Vehicle Registration is not the same as Vehicle Licensing. Without a registered vehicle, you cannot obtain a license disc and might end up with a nasty traffic fine when driving the unregistered vehicle on public roads.
🡠 Back To HomeDOCUMENTS YOU NEED TO SUBMIT:
- The manufacturer's certificate containing all the relevant details of the vehicle
- Your Identity document copy
- Roadworthy Certificate if the vehicle is a heavy load or Road Transport Quality System [RTQS] vehicle.
- New owner's Proof of address (Utility Bill or First Page of Bank Statement)
- If the utility bill is not in your name, the owner of the bill must make an affidavit declaring that you live at the address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit, plus a copy of his ID
- If you stay at an informal settlement, you must bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your address.

Side-note: If your motor vehicle is financed, the financing institution is the titleholder of the vehicle.
Always keep the original copy of your motor vehicle registration certificate in a safe place, as it is not a fairly easy task to obtain a copy of this document (refer to duplicate-original-natis-certificate).
In the following cases your motor vehicle registration becomes null and void:
- The vehicle license disc has not been renewed for more than four years
- The vehicle was involved in an accident and has been declared permanently unfit for use
- You sold the vehicle (changed ownership)
- Your vehicle has been repossessed for more than 31 days
